Coup Attempt: On the night of the 15th July, a section of the Turkish military, several thousand in strength attempted a military coup. Ultimately it failed as the rebels made what appear to be some pretty basic errors. For instance they neglected to capture the president and he was then able to rally his supporters and call them out into the street to resist the coup, which they duly did. Also, perhaps they haven’t checked the statistics but Turkeys army is huge, there are three to four hundred thousand active servicemen so they would have had to have been extremely confident of the rest of the military following their lead.  A strange set of circumstances indeed, what followed the failed coup is the arrest of thousands of police, soldiers and judges, all of whom are supposed to have been involved in the coup. This will be looked at in more detail in July’s Monthly News Review.
